Diabetic Foot Care – Diabetes is decease where body produces less or no insulin. This results in higher level of glucose in the body, which causes damage to blood vessels and impairs the immune system. Due to poor immune system in the body, bacterial wounds can become life threatening. Diabetes also effects the circulation of the blood flow in the body; therefore the antibiotics cannot get to the area of infection. Hence amputation of the body part, especially the foot is the best form of treatment.
Diabetic Foot Care Procedures
People with Diabetes must be completely aware of the Diabetic foot care procedures. There are several factors which can cause diabetic infections and foot problems for a person with diabetes. It is imperative that a person with diabetes follows the following few steps to avoid any serious damage.
- Inspect your foot every day – use a magnifying glass to inspect the bottom of your foot, and if you find any changes, even a small spot, call your doctor immediately.
- Wash your foot with lukewarm water – Keeping your foot clean and fresh will reduces the chances of any bacterial infections.
- Moisturizing your foot regularly – Moisturizing your foot will keep your foot from itching and cracking of the heels. But make sure not use any cream between the toes.
- Cut nails carefully – Do not cut nails too short as this can lead to internal toe nail growth.
- Wear clean and dry Socks – wear sock even when you go to bed if you feel cold, do use hot water bottles.
- Check your shoes before wearing it.
- Avoid wearing tight socks as this can effect blood circulation.
- Meet your doctor if you develop any corns or calluses. Never treat them yourself.
- Don’t let your feet get cold, keep them warm and dry.
- Do not smoke, as smoking does not allow free blood circulation to the feet.
- Meet your podiatrist on a regular basis to avoid any foot complications.
Make sure to keep a track of the diabetes level in your body. Also remember to maintain a healthy diet and do not consume any direct form of glucose such as sugar or sweets.
