Bunion Surgery
Bunion Surgery – A bunion is a condition when your big toe moves toward your second toe, and the bone behind the big toe moves inward causing a swelling on the inside of your foot. The Bunion is also known as Hallux Abducto Valgus in the medical Latin term.
Bunions can be treated by you at home using conservative methods; however treating Bunions at home will not help you get of it – it will only help you ease pain until you seek medical attention such as a Bunion Surgery.
..
How to ease Bunion pain:
- Use a pad especially designed for Bunion deformity.
- Use a separator between your big toe and the second toe to avoid abutting against each other. These separators usually made of silicone.
- Use a Bunion Splint during the night to reduce pressure between the toes.
- Apply ice cubes on the bunion once every day.
- Use a pain reliever gel.
If all the above said methods does not ease pain and if the Bunion interrupts in your daily activities and the pain inside the joint increases then it is time for you to meet your podiatrist.
There are various types of Bunion Surgery, and they are assessed based on each individual and the biochemical structure of the individual patient. Some procedures don’t require you to use any walking aid such as crutches but they have a risk of returning the Bunion condition. The procedures which require you to use the crutches are better, since they give long term results.
The Bunion surgery is classified into two major categories:
- Head Procedures and
- Base Procedures.
In a head procedure the bone of the big toe is cut and moved to correct the bunion. Depending on the necessary corrections, various types of bones are cut and adjusted. The Head procedure is usually used for mild and moderate Bunion.
In a base procedure, the surgery is performed around the base of the big toe bone. Base procedure is more complex and is usually used for moderate to severe Bunion.
It is important that you should find an experienced surgeon who has the skill to perform all types of surgery and understands the biochemical structure of each individual to perform the surgery.
Once the surgery is taken place, the podiatrist would recommend you to use orthotics or insoles to improve foot biochemical function and help prevent return of the Bunion deformity. If you already have an orthotics, then you would have to get new ones to suit the new shape of your feet.
